🎓 Futures 101
- What they are — contracts to buy or sell an index or commodity at a set price on a future date. Traders use them to bet on direction or hedge; most exit before expiry, nobody takes delivery of the S&P 500.
- Why they matter after hours — stocks stop at 4 PM ET, futures don't. Green index futures overnight usually mean a higher open tomorrow; a sudden drop at 2 AM says news broke somewhere.
- Reading the board — Open Interest is how many contracts are outstanding (the pros watch it for conviction), Volume is today's activity, and the contract spec tells you what one contract controls — e.g. one E-mini S&P is $50 × the index, so a 10-point move is $500 per contract.
- Leverage warning — futures move real money on small margins. Novices should treat this board as a market thermometer, not a shopping list.

🎓 Reading the Bond Market
- Yield curve inversion — short rates above long rates (a negative 2s10s or 10Y–3M spread) has preceded every modern U.S. recession. Watch re-steepening after an inversion: that's historically when the trouble actually starts.
- Basis points — bond people speak in bps: 1 bp = 0.01%. A ±5 bp day in the 10-year is normal; ±15 bp means something happened.
- MOVE Index — the bond market's VIX. Under 80 is calm, over 120 means Treasury volatility is stressed and usually spills into equities.
- Credit spreads — when HYG (junk) underperforms LQD (investment grade), risk appetite is fading; credit usually smells trouble before stocks do.
- Duration — price sensitivity to rates. TLT carries ~16-year duration: a 10 bp yield move swings its price ~1.6%. The board below lists each fund's duration.
